    New Measurements of Venus Winds with Ground-Based Doppler Velocimetry at CFHT

    operations with observations from the ground using various techniques and spectral domains (Lellouch and Witasse, 2008). We present an analysis of Venus Doppler winds at cloud tops based on observations made at the Canada France Hawaii 3.6-m telescope (CFHT) with the ESPaDOnS visible spectrograph. These observations consisted of high-resolution spectra of Fraunhofer lines in the visible range (0.37-1.05 μm) to measure the winds at cloud tops using the Doppler shift of solar radiation scattered by cloud top particles in the observer's direction (Widemann et al., 2007, 2008). The observations were made during 19-20 February 2011 and were coordinated with Visual Monitoring Camera (VMC) observations by Venus Express. The complete optical spectrum was collected over 40 spectral orders at each point with 2-5 seconds exposures, at a resolution of about 80000. The observations included various points of the dayside hemisphere at a phase angle of 67°, between +10° and -60° latitude, in steps of 10° , and from +70° to -12° longitude relative to sub-Earth meridian in steps of 12°. The Doppler shift measured in scattered solar light on Venus dayside results from two instantaneous motions: (1) a motion between the Sun and Venus upper cloud particles; (2) a motion between the observer and Venus clouds. The measured Doppler shift, which results from these two terms combined, varies with the planetocentric longitude and latitude and is minimum at meridian ΦN = ΦSun - ΦEarth where the two components subtract to each other for a pure zonal regime. Due to the need for maintaining a stable velocity reference during the course of acquisition using high resolution spectroscopy, we measure relative Doppler shifts to ΦN. The main purpose of our work is to provide variable wind measurements with respect to the background atmosphere, complementary to simultaneous measurements made with the VMC camera onboard the Venus Express. We will present first results from this work, comparing with previous results by the CFHT/ESPaDOnS and VLT-UVES spectrographs (Machado et al., 2012), with Galileo fly-by measurements and with VEx nominal mission observations (Peralta et al., 2007, Luz et al., 2011).     Survival of branching random walks in random environment

    We study survival of nearest-neighbour branching random walks in random environment (BRWRE) on Z{\mathbb Z}. A priori there are three different regimes of survival: global survival, local survival, and strong local survival. We show that local and strong local survival regimes coincide for BRWRE and that they can be characterized with the spectral radius of the first moment matrix of the process. These results are generalizations of the classification of BRWRE in recurrent and transient regimes. Our main result is a characterization of global survival that is given in terms of Lyapunov exponents of an infinite product of i.i.d. 2×22\times 2 random matrices.Comment: 17 pages; to appear in Journal of Theoretical Probabilit

    A síndrome de Wells, também conhecido como celulite eosinofílica, é uma patologia cutânea rara. As lesões clínicas características incluem pápulas, vesículas ou grandes placas eritematosas, que podem aparecer em toda a superfície corporal, podendo mimetizar um quadro de urticária crónica. Os autores apresentam dois casos clínicos de doentes com o diagnóstico de S. Wells: doente 1, sexo feminino, 41 anos e doente 2, sexo masculino, 40 anos. Ambos apresentavam um quadro clínico de lesões maculopapulares generalizadas, pruriginosas recorrentes, que persistiam pelo menos 24 horas, refractárias a anti -histamínicos, com necessidade frequente de corticoterapia sistémica para controlo sintomatológico. Como sintomas associados salientam -se astenia, mialgias e artralgias. O estudo complementar em ambos os casos excluiu a presença doutra patologia associada e as biópsias cutâneas revelaram celulite eosinofílica. Ambos efectuaram dapsona 100 mg/dia com evolução clínica favorável. Estes casos demonstram a necessidade do estudo histopatológico cutâneo em doentes com lesões urticariformes com necessidade de recorrer frequentemente aos corticóides sistémicos e com reaparecimento das lesões com a redução ou interrupção destes fármacos

    The type N Karlhede bound is sharp

    We present a family of four-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds whose invariant classification requires the seventh covariant derivative of the curvature tensor. The spacetimes in questions are null radiation, type N solutions on an anti-de Sitter background. The large order of the bound is due to the fact that these spacetimes are properly CH2CH_2, i.e., curvature homogeneous of order 2 but non-homogeneous. This means that tetrad components of R,R,(2)RR, \nabla R, \nabla^{(2)}R are constant, and that essential coordinates first appear as components of (3)R\nabla^{(3)}R. Covariant derivatives of orders 4,5,6 yield one additional invariant each, and (7)R\nabla^{(7)}R is needed for invariant classification. Thus, our class proves that the bound of 7 on the order of the covariant derivative, first established by Karlhede, is sharp. Our finding corrects an outstanding assertion that invariant classification of four-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds requires at most (6)R\nabla^{(6)}R.Comment: 7 pages, typos corrected, added citation and acknowledgemen

    Electrons in Dry DNA from Density Functional Calculations

    The electronic structure of an infinite poly-guanine - poly-cytosine DNA molecule in its dry A-helix structure is studied by means of density-functional calculations. An extensive study of 30 nucleic base pairs is performed to validate the method. The electronic energy bands of DNA close to the Fermi level are then analyzed in order to clarify the electron transport properties in this particularly simple DNA realization, probably the best suited candidate for conduction. The energy scale found for the relevant band widths, as compared with the energy fluctuations of vibrational or genetic-sequence origin, makes highly implausible the coherent transport of electrons in this system. The possibility of diffusive transport with sub-nanometer mean free paths is, however, still open. Information for model Hamiltonians for conduction is provided.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Do altmetrics promote Open Access? An exploratory analysis on altmetric differences between types of access in the field of Physics

    The promotion of Open Science needs new metrics that encourage openness in scientific practices, and can help institutions to monitor it. In 2017, the European Commission (EC) created an Expert Group with the task of informing the commission on the possibility of including altmetric indicators as potential metrics that could foster and monitor open science advancements, but it failed to show how these metrics can help to foster Open Science. The current paper analyses differences in altmetric scores between Green OA publications, Gold OA publications and non OA publications. The goal of the paper is to empirically study whether altmetric indicators reinforce Open Access practices regardless of the type of access. We report a preliminary analysis based on two Physics journals. Our results show that gold OA documents are best covered in Altmetric.com and receive higher mentions than documents with other types of access. This is especially troublesome in the case of green OA, as it reflects that altmetric indicators do promote a very specific type of access closely linked with the publishing industry
